Larson Heights Support Dogs
March 8, 2021
Dear Parent and/or Guardian:
During the 2020-21 school year, your child will have the opportunity to interact with our two new additions to the teaching staff at Larson Heights Elementary School. We are lucky to introduce Harley and Fezzik, school therapy dogs in training.
Harley is training as a Therapy Dog and is working toward her certificate through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. She passed her good citizen test and is working toward her qualification to work as a therapy dog in a variety of settings, one of which is in schools. While Harley is working toward this certification she will be on campus in a limited capacity and while at school she will always be leashed and under the control of her handler. Harley is a Goldendoodle and is hypoallergenic. Harley has completed extensive training through Dogology NW, Sky Ranch Labradors and is continuing with Wenatchee Kennel Club to work with children and adults to provide a calming presence when a person is in need. Harley has soft curly black hair and deep dark brown eyes. Harley is a calm, medium-sized dog who will reach an adult weight of 55 lbs. She is eager to have your child snuggle in, pet her or read her a story.
Fezzik is training as a Therapy Dog and is working toward his certificate through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He has passed his good citizen test and is working toward his qualification to work as a therapy dog in a variety of settings, one of which is in schools. While Fezzik is working toward this certification he will be on campus in a limited capacity and while at school he will always be leashed and under the control of his handler. Fezzik is a Spinone Italiano and is considered the gentle giant of the bird dog world. While he was bred to be a bird dog, Spinones make exceptional therapy dogs due to their loving and chill temperament. Fezzik is still growing and by the time he is done, he will look like a 100lb Muppet with a beard and bushy eyebrows. Fezzik has extensive training through Crossroads Dog Training and Sky Ranch Labradors to work with children and adults to provide a calming presence when a person is in need.
We understand that some students may have allergies or a fear of dogs. As a school, Mrs. Schotzko, Ms. Galbraith, and Mrs. Vasquez, the dog handlers, will ensure your guidelines as a parent are followed in regards to Harley and Fezzik meeting or interacting with your children or your children’s classrooms. Look for information coming from your student’s teacher if we plan to introduce a therapy dog into your child’s or children’s classrooms.
Therapy dogs have been utilized in schools throughout the country to help alleviate school anxiety and depression and can help students develop a better sense of self-worth and trust. Working with a Therapy Dog can help students stabilize their emotions, improve their communication and socialization skills. We are excited for the opportunity to have two Therapy Dogs at Larson Heights and look forward to lots of smiling faces from staff, students, and parents that interact with Harley and Fezzik.
If your child has allergies that are affected by exposure to pet dander or may have an aversion for or fear of dogs, please notify Mrs. Schotzko at Kschotzko@mlsd161.org, Mrs. Vasquez at email@example.com, or our school nurse at firstname.lastname@example.org. we will make arrangements to support your child.
